Challenges for the Power Grid in the Energy Transition
Discover how the latest diagnostic tools can help ensure stability in changing power grids.
Increasing energy demand and the transition to renewable energy are challenging the ability of power grids around the world to ensure a stable and reliable power supply.
Our guest in this episode is Wilfried Breuer, Managing Director of Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen and Chairman of the German CIGRE committee. Wilfried recently spoke about the challenges faced by the power industry in the energy transition and its impact on asset diagnosis at this year’s OMICRON Diagnosis Week Conference.
We had the chance to speak with Wilfried about these current challenges at this year’s conference. He describes the ever-changing energy mix in Germany and how it compares with other countries around the world. He also highlights the growing use and impact of renewable energy and the challenges with handling the future energy demand.
Wilfried also explains the increasing need for smart power grids and how the integrated use of the latest offline and online diagnostic solutions, performance management systems and even artificial intelligence will help operators ensure a safe, stable and reliable power supply in the future.
One of the new offline and online diagnostic solutions mentioned by Wilfried was jointly developed by Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen and OMICRON for vibro acoustic measurements on power transformer on-load tap changers (OLTCs).

“Offline and online diagnosis will be key to achieving reliability because the assets and components in the power grid are being stressed higher than ever before.”
